Business Name – Step It Up Dance
Position in the Business – Founder
How did the business start?
I started the company to bring fun, structured hip hop dance classes to children and help them discover a love for dance.
I founded the business in January 2012, starting off with just one teacher and one class after school. This has built up to a team of five employees, multiple freelance Dance teachers and classes for children of all ages within nurseries, schools and communities across The Lothians.
Your journey to where you are now?
Lots of people are surprised that I’m not a dance teacher! In my previous career I conducted market research on behalf of the Scottish Government looking into how to reduce anti-social behaviour amongst children and young people. The answer is to help them discover an activity that they love, delivered by a strong role model. And so Step It Up Dance was born. We pride ourselves on only recruiting expert, friendly, nurturing teachers. We deliver a comprehensive, structured training programme that covers all of our classes, parties and workshops so that they are completely confident delivering each of these and being an excellent representative of the brand at all times.
What is your favourite part of the business?
I love seeing my team progress and gain in confidence the longer they spend working for the company. We always promote from within and we have some amazing people who’ve been with us for many years, starting as a dance teacher and working up to senior roles within the company.
Do you have a memorable moment in the business?
This has to be when I pitched at the launch of Entrepreneurial Spark (a business accelerator) at RBS Gogarburn. It was petrifying, there was an audience of 500 people across three floors of the building and my face projected into TV screens all over the place. It was a real high once it was over!
How do you spend your time away from work?
I have two businesses (my second business is www.thesimplicityconcept.com) so there’s not much down time. But I do love holidays with my family, preferably in Ibiza where we plan to move to eventually.
